Be Prepared for the Leaning Tower of Pisa

When preparing for your visit, make note that the tower is so much more than just a tower: it is approximately 14,453 tons of leaning marble and stone, with over 200 steps and it’s tilt is over 4 meters to the side. This will make for a very interesting climbing experience!

The Square of Miracles, where the tower is located, is actually composed of several different elements.  Each structure has a distinct historic value and individual beauty:

  • The Cathedral or Duomo, started in 1062  has a distinctive Pisan Romanesque style of architecture
  • The Baptistery, which is one of the largest baptisteries in Italy, boasts truly notable acoustics which are often demonstrated with chants and songs (every 30min-1 hour)
  • The Camposanto, which is the old cemetery, is said to have been built around a shipload of sacred soil brought back to Pisa during the crusades thus giving it the name “Holy Field”
  • Sinopie Museum located inside the New Hospital of the Holy Spirit, houses the preparatory sketches of the frescoes in the Camposanto destroyed during WWII.
  • The Leaning Tower of Pisa, of course, which is set to the far side of the Cathedral yet visible from every corner of the square

When considering all this beauty and the vast number of people who come to admire the Leaning Tower and surroundings, it really is important to know that visiting the Leaning Tower of Pisa is more than just showing up. Reservations are required and they come with precise entry times and limited numbers, unfortunately just showing up to the ticket office will not guarantee you entry. Pre-booking is highly recommended in order to avoid disappointment when you arrive, particularly in the spring and summer.

Plan Time to Visit Everything

The entrance into the Leaning Tower of Pisa may require a ticket and entry time, but the Cathedral of Pisa is free. However, it still requires a ticket. The good news is once you have pre-booked your ticket to the Leaning Tower you can then use the same ticket to enter into the Cathedral and visit the many works of art including mosaics, paintings, sculptures and even the place that Galileo is believed to have formulated his theory about the movement of a pendulum. The Camposanto, perhaps one of the more stunning monumental cemeteries in Italy, the Sinopie Museum and the Baptistery, with its ornate architectural structure & classical interior, all require a separate entry ticket but this you can buy on the spot when you arrive in Pisa. We highly recommend planning to make a full day trip to Pisa to see more of what the city has to offer.
